Electro Gothic & DarkWave

Electro-Gothic Definition (Terminology)

Bands in this category are clearly influenced by the traditional gothic rock sound, but have an elecronic twist. Keyboards and synthesizers do not necessarily have to dominate the music, but they are a significant part of the bands' sound. Some bands may rely entirely on digital instruments.

Gothic Industrial was spawned from musicians using a vast array of materiel as unconventional instrumentation to produce their acoustic art. From that, musicians realized they could sample those sounds, and replay them electronically. That further progressed into more of a mainstream sound; you start banging on things, people will eventually start dancing to it! Industrial music tends to have a political theme. Subjects of war, governments, buearocracies and social systems are apparent, although other aspects of life are also expressed, "I love you, I hate you, I want to break you into dust" (Cubanate). Loads of aggression and anger typify this music. It can be an excellent catharsis.

Gothic Rock, or Death Rock is guitar based music. Basically, these bands have the standard rock line-up of musicians: guitar, bass guitar, drums, and vocalist. Other elements can also included, which tend to amplify the gothic sound, however, the guitars and drums still dominate. This grouping includes the early punk sound as well.

Psychedelic rock was born out of the infamous 1960s 'acid tests' of Ken Kesey, where LSD was taken communally during "happenings," large free-form parties thrown in the Beat tradition. Many of these parties took place in or around San Francisco, and the Grateful Dead were frequently the house band, supplying a soundtrack rich in musical experimentation for the newly enlightened audience. Many other bands were quick to follow suit, whether it was fellow San Franciscans Jefferson Airplane or Los Angeles outfits like the Doors, the Byrds, and Love. Jimi Hendrix, a virtuoso guitarist from Seattle, found fame in the London underground and soon set a global standard for musicianship and showmanship. U.K. bands like Pink Floyd and Tomorrow put their art-school concepts through the LSD blender and created sounds to match their newly expanded consciousness. As the Summer of Love settled into the quagmire of Vietnam and race riots, the psychedelic sound became dated and bands like the 13th Floor Elevators, Moby Grape, and Pink Floyd were forced to either disband or rethink their approach after losing members to drug busts and psychosis. However, the psyche-soul of the Temptations proved the acid experience wasn't limited to white, middle-class college kids, and the links between drugs, music, and exploration had been irreversibly drawn.

Notable Artists: The Grateful Dead, Love, Pearls Before Swine, Cream, T. Rex

Requiem & Romanticizing Personal Demons

I have decided on two things to slowly purge me of the angst (in some instances anger) that has been haunting me: go back to gym & start a blog. I said that I will (try to) lessen writing about bad experiences. But a new acquaintance kind of convinced me that I should use the “inspiration” and continue to “romanticize” about it. Actually, that’s what I have been doing all this time!

In an online chat with another friend, we had touched on Romanticism (and how Hollywood has messed up our concept of such) and its cousins Fatalism and Nihilism because of a “stupid” question I had asked about romance. I actually felt lectured on, but I took it as consequence for being nosy.

Now let’s talk about the product of my last bout with personal demons.
New Year, New Album Soon, New Tune for Download
Greetings folks!

I hope you all had good holidays. It was a drizzling NYE here in Manila and it was kind of a wrong time for me to choose to celebrate it outside. But I'm also welcoming it a big way by announcing the impending release of a new album and more new music arriving within the year.

I sent out a missive some time ago about a remix album. It is a collection of remixes/interpretations (by myself and about 15 music colleagues/friends) of the song Watari's Machine (under the Names Are For Tombstones moniker) that I composed back in 2005. Finally it has materialized and I have most of the tracks with me. I'm down to post production and doing the artwork.

Featured artists are:

Arvie Bartolome
Blend:er
Dead Electroniks
Demolee
DJ SpinTech
Emorej
FoodShelterandClothing
Mighty Dax
Wallster

I am also waiting for updates from:

DJ Beatmaster
Evo Evolver
Funeral Frost
Hyneria Moss Soundscape
Isus
Jethro Joaquin
Morse
Silverfilter

For the album art I am trying to collaborate with sibling ...

NAMES ARE FOR TOMBSTONES @ NOKIA IAC

Hello folks.

names are for tombstones has been invited to be part of Nokia Music Independent Artists Club (Nokia IAC or just IAC) and had initially uploaded the original version of Watari's Machine. They seem to be developing a website to supply material for their mobile device applications.

If successful, NAFT's music could be sent to international music organizations in the form of sampler compilations that would further expose the material. There are fellow Filipino artists there already.

Please visit the link, download and comment. Support your own!

Four Years & A Lifetime Ago...

4th Anniversary, October 3, 2007

It’s been four years since I first went up the stage as names are for tombstones: three guys nervous to play live for the first time at Mayric’s. Yeah, it was initially a three-piece but only for a few months as my friends’ priorities changed. Inevitably, I continued solo because that’s how it should have been in the first place.

I choose not to mention names here because for sure I will leave out some and unwittingly cause their disappointment or at worst earn their ire. So I’d like to say one big, universal and heartfelt Thank you to those I met along the way, worked with, helped me in any way, remained loyal (patient) and became friends with. You are my muse.

This is also a period for deep introspection as I deal with a trying period in my life. All the anxiety has been fuel for creativity. But it’s a draining form of creative energy that I call negative inspiration. A friend said “With great pain comes great art.” He’s right. But nowaday...
